IS THE NEW TREND DARKER COLOURED CEILINGS?

Painting your ceilings and walls in the same colour is a wonderful new trend, but one that has to be carefully considered, it's definitely not a one size fits all solution. Here are some reasons you might want to consider it, and why I chose to do exactly this at Pam's home in Mt Eliza.

Painting ceilings creates a sense of coziness and adds a feeling of continuity in a room. Believe it or not, smaller rooms take to darker ceilings beautifully as it eliminates any visual interruption making the room appear cohesive and spacious. Powder rooms and bathrooms look amazing with darker ceilings.

In this living room there are different wall finishes, ceiling heights and bulkheads, including a ladder leading up to a loft style cubby for the kids. Can you imagine painting out the ceiling in a white? It would have broken the visual cue, so I suggested using a moody neutral grey called Dulux Stepney for walls, ceilings, trims and ladder. It was a bold move for Pam, but she was ecstatic with the end result. The room now oozes coziness, character and draws the family into it everyday.

In open plan living or connected spaces, using the same colour on the walls and ceilings maintains a sense of flow making it more visually appealing. On the other hand it can define spaces like this room. Photo courtesy from Dulux 2024 colour forecast.

Painting everything the same colour accentuates design elements such as cabinetry, beams, feature cornices and roses in a modern way. Doing this provides a shadowing effect rather than traditionally using an accent colour and adds an untold elegance in any room. In the end its your personal preference as to whether you paint your ceilings and walls the same colour, the overall aesthetic should be your guide. But why not test your boundaries and experiment a little to see, you never know you might LOVE it!
