NEW JAPANDI STYLE EXPLAINED

Japandi is a recent design style that's emerged as a fusion of Japanese and Scandinavian design principles. Ultimately the style combines simplicity, functionality and minimalism with traditional craftsmanship, neutral materials and attention to Japanese aesthetics. It's been a new word to my vocabulary, so here it is explained.

Both Japanese and Scandinavian design favour the use of beautiful natural materials, often blending wood, stone and travertine for a warm and inviting interior. The paint colours I'm using for this new style, focus on earthy tones such as Dulux Almond Swirl, Dulux White Beach Quarter, Dulux Pragmatic and Dulux Grey Baron.

For simplicity and minimalism, eliminate unnecessary clutter to emphasise clean lines and open spaces, this also brings a sense of tranquility and calmness. Furniture is chosen for functionality and practicality, usually with a dual purpose and aligns with the minimalist approach to design. Attention to detail in every piece is important which showcases the beauty of simplicity.

Wabi Sabi influence is a Japanese aesthetic that embraces imperfection and hero's the beauty found in ageing materials. You'll often find imperfect decor pieces within a room which sends an appreciation to the passage of time. Geometric shapes with simple but well defined lines are also an important design principle for the Japandi style.

Lastly, a strong connection to nature is paramount, so have large windows, mirrors that reflect gardens, indoor plants and loads of natural light.

Here are some decor items I just love that embrace the Japandi style, all from Elme Living.
